The fire safety upgrade of Berlin Spandau station is based on a fully digital approach to planning within an existing building. Building Information Modelling (BIM) brings together existing conditions, interdisciplinary coordination and model-based cost management in one continuous digital workflow.
Successful planning within an existing building starts with a thorough understanding of what is already there. For complex transport infrastructure such as Berlin Spandau station, an accurate digital representation of the existing structure provides the foundation for reliable planning, informed decision-making and efficient project delivery. The project began with a comprehensive 3D survey of the station, followed by the development of a detailed BIM model in Revit. Serving as the basis for all planning phases (HOAI Phases 1–5), the model creates a shared digital environment that supports precise planning and consistent project development throughout the design process. All disciplines are coordinated within a central BIM coordination model, enabling early clash detection and construction sequencing simulations using Navisworks. This collaborative digital workflow improves interdisciplinary coordination, minimises planning risks and increases transparency across the project. In addition, model-based cost estimation provides a reliable foundation for cost control and informed decision-making from the earliest planning stages.
